Scripture: Proverbs 1:7 NIV
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

Observation: To fear the Lord means to respect His word, to worship Him and regard Him as truly awesome. This reverence or respect for the Lord is the beginning and the preeminent part of knowledge. In other words, this is the starting point and the essence of knowledge and wisdom.  Arrogant and prideful people do not embrace this wisdom and instruction. They have no self-control.

Application: I must make every effort to maintain a healthy regard and respect for the Lord.  I do that by obedience, embracing the fruit of the spirit self-control and discipline as it relates to the Lord and what He instructs me to do and how he encourages me to live.  I must stay humble, open and teachable as I grow in grace and in the knowledge of His word. I must invite the Holy Spirit to help me to live the way that Jesus desires for me to live and not be foolish by going my own way while rejecting His.

Prayer: Lord, help me to fear you.  Help me to embrace wisdom and instruction. I cannot do this on my own. Give me the desire and discipline to reverence and fear you by doing what you have instructed for me to do as it is written in your word.  Let me not be foolish but rather let me be like the psalmist David who said – let those of us who fear you say “His lovingkindness is everlasting” – in Jesus Name I pray, Amen, Amen, and Amen : )
