Proverbs 30
Scripture: Proverbs 30:1-4
Pastor Mike Scherer
Scripture:
The skeptic swore, “There is no God!
No God!—I can do anything I want!
I’m more animal than human;
so-called human intelligence escapes me.
“I flunked ‘wisdom.’
I see no evidence of a holy God.
Has anyone ever seen Anyone
climb into Heaven and take charge?
grab the winds and control them?
gather the rains in his bucket?
stake out the ends of the earth?
Just tell me his name, tell me the names of his sons.
Come on now—tell me!”
Observation:
God? Who Needs Him?
Many people have unknowingly spoken this scripture millions of times for thousands of years It has been uttered and thought by both unbelievers and by so called Christians. From my childhood back in the 50’s and 60’s up until now I have seen American grow cold to the things of God. God has been replaced by prosperity, power, pride, and people. God may be on our priority list but He is sometimes not at the top of it.
When I think about our God I think about our Heavenly Father who loves us so much. As an earthly father I love my children so much and I want the very best for them also. If I see one of them going off in the wrong direction it breaks my heart. What do I have to do to get them to listen to me and obey me? How do I get their attention? I am always there for them. I reach out to them offering everything that they need. But they may keep going against my wishes and act as if I don’t even exist. As a last resort I have to let them go so they can crash and burn. I don’t will it but I allow it. It’s called tough love. Hopefully they come back to me before it’s too late.
Application:
As we look back in history we see how God reacts when His children fall away. We see that most of civilization was destroyed at one time by a flood. We see that He allows his children to be defeated by their enemies and become slaves to them. We can also study the fall of the Roman Empire, the Babylonians, Greece, Ancient Egypt, etc. These nations had an arrogant rejection of God’s authority. Time and time again history has proven that a nation’s decline in morality has led to judgment. Is it possible that the United States could be returned to ashes, like so many great nations that have gone before? The apostle Paul says in Galatians 6:7: Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.
Prayer:
Let us pray for our country, our president and political leaders, our pastors, our neighbors and our families. Let us be prepared for a shaking or whatever it takes that we give you our undivided attention.
Heavenly Father. We accept your perfect will to be done. You have done so much for us and we all have fallen. Forgive us. Let us not be lukewarm. We make you first and foremost in every area of our lives. We put our complete faith and trust in you. We love you so very much! Thank you for what you have done in our lives. You are an awesome God.
We lift up our president and government leaders to you. We pray they will seek You for wisdom and guidance. We lift up our pastors and spiritual leaders to you. We pray that they will not be discouraged and be filled with your Holy Spirit. We lift up our family, friends, and neighbors to you and pray that they will come to know You and completely put their faith and trust in Jesus by whatever means you deem necessary. We see with our eyes of faith a new nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.
